Description
Nisei male, was born on 02/11/1917 in Hayward, CA to a farm family. Roberts story is essentially about a familys services to America. Eldest sister Chiyo, a scientist, helped develop medical diagnostic tests for mononucleosis and sickle cell anemia. Brother George was the first volunteer for the U.S. army from Amache, Colorado internment camp. He went to Germany with the 522 Field Artillery (part of the 442 Regimental Combat Team) and helped liberate internees at Dachau prison camp. Sister June started as a cadet nurse, and eventually became a Professor Emeritus at a college. Robert was initially drafted in November of 1941, was initially misdiagnosed as having tuberculosis which was then correctly diagnosed as coccidiomycosis (lung fungus). Due to his medical problems he was sent to Merced, CA Assembly Center, then to Amache, Colorado. He describes in detail issues about the loyalty oath, the discrimination and strong abuses aimed at him and 1,300 men who volunteered for the army His narrative about boot camp training and battlefield experiences in Italy and France, including the Battle of the Lost Battalion, are especially detailed and graphic.
