Samuel L. Washington shown at the back of a grop of pilots listening to a briefing. The photograph is captioned in a separate item: "Briefing the Red Tail Fighter Group -- Toni Frissell. The 332nd Fighter Group of the 15th AAF, led by Col. Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., has piled up an enviable record. The all-Negro outfit was in the European theater from April, 1943, until the war's end. During their combat history they flew everything but P-38's. Ramitelli Italy 1944 Red Tails." Washington, a graduate of the Tuskegee Army Air Field, served as a P-51 "Red Tail" fighter pilot with the 332nd Fighter Group during World War II. He is identified as the man at the back of the room against the wall, who appears to be smoking a cigarette.
