Description
Photographic portrait of Miss Ellen Browning Scripps, before 1933. Miss Scripps, an elderly woman, is pictured seated at left, a book in her lap. Sunlight coming in from the right illuminates her face to the point where her features are partially obscured. She wears a white ruffled blouse and a long skirt. She wears her hair up in a bun. Fern fronds are visible in the background behind her. Miss Scripps was a philanthropist who lived from 1836 to 1932. She had acquired a small fortune from her own investments before she received a large legacy from her brother's will in ca.1900.
