Charles Handy article on the changing role and necessity of managers in organizations. Handy begins the article discussing the definition and importance of flexibility in the workplace. He concludes that flexibility ultimately has two chief results, namely, that more people will be working outside the organization than inside it, and how organizations will be increasingly run without hosts or executives called managers. Because of such alterations in the organization, the emerging organization will be horizontal, not vertical, and there will thus be fewer manager jobs overall and a preponderance of people retiring at 50 with a usable portfolio. Handy closes the article stressing how these ideas and organizational trends are socially dangerous because of the drastic changes they would bring about.
