Description
The first "Faire" opened its two-day run on May 11, 1963, originally started by founders Ron and Phyllis Patterson. Now called the Renaissance Pleasure Faire, it is a commercial re-enactment of a 1580s market faire at Port Deptford, a waterfront town located in Elizabethan England. The fair is held in various locations and is generally open from the first weekend in April through the weekend before Memorial Day.
Photograph caption dated May 10, 1963 reads "Phyllis Patterson of Hollywood sits atop a show wagon as preparations for the KPFK Pleasure Faire get under way. The faire will be held Saturday and Sunday starting at noon at Haskell's Ranch, 4074 Vineland Ave., North Hollywood, to raise funds for the listener-sponsored FM station in North Hollywood. Also helping prepare for the Renaissance-patterned event are Peter Mann, 11, left, Hollywood, and Steve Altobelli, 11, North Hollywood." Banners on the wagon read 'The Piccolo Playmakers' and the boys are holding a sign that says "Commedia dell' art."
