Title supplied by cataloger. In the New Testament, the author of the Gospel of Luke records that Saint Matthias was the Apostle chosen by the remaining eleven apostles to replace Judas Iscariot following Judas' betrayal of Jesus and his suicide. It is believed that St. Matthias was born in the 1st century AD in Judea (modern-day Israel) and died circa 80 AD in Jerusalem or in Colchis (modern-day Georgia). It is also believed that Matthias was one of the seventy disciples of Jesus, and had been with Him from His baptism by John to the Ascension. All further information concerning the life and death of Saint Matthias is vague and contradictory. Exterior view of St. Matthias Catholic Church, founded in 1913, and located at 3095 E. Florence Avenue in the city of Huntington Park. This photograph was taken from across the street and shows the left side of the church, as well as a portion of the adjacent school playground; the school caters to students in Pre-Kinder through 8th grade. Several tall stained glass windows can be seen along the length of the building. The church office is located around the corner at 7215 Mission Place. Photograph dated: June 2005.
