Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989
Lillian Copeland was the first great female weight-thrower, setting numerous records in the shot put, javelin, and discus. The L.A. High and USC grad took the silver medal in the discus at the 1928 Amsterdam Games, the first women's track and field event to be decided in Olympic history. Four years later, at the Los Angeles Olympics, Copeland won the gold medal on her final throw. A Jewish athlete, she chose to boycott the 1936 Olympic Games in Nazi Germany.
