Description
Taken from 10th Street, between L and N streets, this Sept. 9, 1895, photograph reveals an illuminated California State Capitol building. The building and surrounding trees are dressed in lights, while a sign declaring the greatness of the American inventors “Morse, Franklin, Edison” is also lighted and sits in the foreground. Atop the building’s pediment is an enlightened bear with the letters NSGW – Native Sons of the Golden West – inscribed upon it. The organization was a primary player in celebrating both Admission Day and the delivery of hydroelectric power to Sacramento from Folsom, Calif. It was reported that the lights of the Capitol dome could be seen from up to 90 miles away.
