Photograph was edited for publication purposes. Photograph caption dated September 8, 1962 reads, "Where'd the young fella go? - One minute you're talking to a handsome, clean-cut young man; the next thing you know, he's gone and in his place sits a grubby, gnarled and wizened old man with a devilish twinkle in his eye. This happens every evening (except Sundays) and every Wednesday afternoon backstage at the Philharmonic as British actor Clive Revell [sic] gets into makeup for his starring role in 'Oliver!' Playing Fagin in the hit show (which leaves for New York Sept. 22), Revell turns in a brilliant show-stopping performance, equaled only by his Chaney-like ability with makeup. These pictures by Valley Times TODAY photographer Gordon Dean ably depict the transformation. After readying himself, the actor deftly places the beard and the wig and then proceeds with the basic application of base makeup, eye-liner, etc. Next comes the painstaking process of aging where wrinkles are accentuated and shadow areas are darkened. That done, the mustache goes on (here he's seen with just half the bedraggled thing in place) and THEN: Wot? Blimey! Hit's Fagin 'imself!"; See images #00124424 through #00124429 for all photos in this series.
