Description
“Two locally trained masons, two of the dormitories and the water tower, Chogoria 4/48.” Portrait of two men working on stone blocks as a child watches. After finding deposits nearby in 1946 Dr Irvine started quarrying volcanic tuff, a stone that was easy to work, for use in the construction of hospital and school buildings in the mission. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1947-1961 at the Chogoria mission which was established near Mt Kenya, in 1922, and run by Dr Irvine.
