Photograph caption date stamped April 23, 1964 reads "Ken Merten of the Valley College Monarchs, one of the top breastroke competitors in the country, practices for the Metropolitan Conference swimming meet, which opened today at Long Beach City College and will run through Saturday. Merten is favored in his event and his teammates are picked to take the All-Metro meet. Valley finished in a tie with Long Beach for the Metro dual meet title." Valley College is in Van Nuys.
