Description
Statue at the entrance of the Huntington Library Building. The Belvedere Mercury, a life size bronze cast in Italy by order of Francis I, King of France early in the sixteenth century, for decoration of his palace at Villeroi. The Mold was taken from the orgi nal marble statue in the Vatican. At the time of the French Revolution the statue was removed and afterwards purchased by Alexander X, Duke of Hamilton and placed in Hamilton Palace. The Statue was acquired from Hamilton in a 1882 sale for the Gould Collection and later purchased by Henry Huntington. Date: June 10, 1937.
