Description
Shown in this image are three men associated with McClellan Air Force Base leadership. Pictured on the right is Major General Arthur W. Vanaman. Vanaman was born on May 9, 1892, in Millville, New Jersey. He graduated from Drexel Institute of Technology in 1915 and enlisted in the Aviation Section of the Army Signal Corps in August 1917. Vanaman would go on to earn his advanced aeronautical engineering degree from MIT in 1918, and graduate from the Army Industrial College (1936) and Army War College (1937). In 1946, Vanaman took over control of McClellan Air Force Base and served as commandant until 1948. He returned to this post in 1952 and served until 1954 when he retired from the Air Force.
