Description
Photograph of people in the swimming pool at Municipal Plunge by "Dick" Whittington, ca.1930. Swimmers frolic in the swimming pool water, their heads poking out of the still depths, others submerged from the torso down. Up on the pavement to the right of the pool, others sit and watch the scene before them and one female swimmer stands beside a small diving board at the poolside. Behind the spectators to the right stands a whitewashed structure bearing the name "Municipal Plunge". The foreground is framed to the right by a large tree, beneath which one can see another structure marked "[...]afe" ["café"?]. To the left of the foreground is an assortment of foliage. The pool is surrounded by a wire fence, and to the leftmost end one can see another house-like structure. Behind this are the tops of trees and the lines from utility poles. In the distance a hillside can be vaguely made out. Writing at the back of the photo print states that this is a "typical Los Angeles municipal swimming pool, one of the sixteen operated for the use of Los Angeles families by the city's playground and recreation department".
