Description
This 1895 photograph shows an illuminated downtown Sacramento during the Grand Electric Carnival. Strings of lights and a glowing golden bear dangle over the street, lighting up streetcar tracks, American flags and several businesses. Taken from the intersection of 10th and K streets looking west, the picture shows, to the left, the State House Hotel at 930 K St. and the Hotel Normandie at 931 K St. The festival was held on Admission Day, Sept. 9, 1895, to celebrate the 22-mile transmission of hydroelectric power from Folsom to Sacramento on July 13 of the same year.
