This image was originally part of a California State Library photographic history project documenting the daily lives and historical, political, and cultural contributions of California's diverse communities. On June 12, 1999, Long Beach residents donated to the Long Beach Public Library 398 family and personal photographs as part of this ongoing statewide project. Shown here are four children and a dog, ready for the "baby parade." The two children on tricycles are wearing swimwear. The two girls are dressed in ballerina tutu costumes. The dog wears a neck bow. A large paper umbrella is attached to the smaller boy's trike. The larger boy in front carries big sign that says: "We heard of California's Beaches, And of its Shining Sun, So please look out 'cause here We come, We're out to have Some Fun." (sic.) The photographer also placed a sign at the base of the boy's bike wheel, which states: "Baby Parade; Long Beach; Sept. 9, 1928." The children range in age from about three to eight. A street sign behind the group states: "No parking in this block." The building filling the background of the image suggests an apartment building or the rear of a business. The donor of this image notes that the poem on the sign is by "Jess," and identifies the children as follows, L-R: Wanda, Ecco, Trippey, Dale, and Frank. DATE NOTES: Noted on image back. ORIG. IMAGE: 7" x 9" B&W glossy print. NEGATIVE: No. KEYWORDS: Advertising, parasol, youngsters, kids.
