Description
1 image. Iron Lung emergency (to Polio-stricken community of Bariloche, southwest of Buenos Aires), 1956. Kim Hallamore (radio "Ham") Keith Gresser (of Pan American). (Handout). Supplementay material reads: "From News Bureau. Pan American. Raw neg. .. Pls. develop. A frantic appeal, voiced by a woman radio 'ham' operator set in motion drastic action across 8,000 miles and triggered two airlines into flying a desperately needed iron lung to the polio-stricken community of Bariloche, located 900 miles southwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The plea of the woman, Mrs. Alicia Parodi, was relayed by a Tarzana 'ham' to Kim Hallamore, Southland iron lung specialist who got busy. In the above photo, Hallamore (suit) is shown with L.A. Cargo Supervisor Keith Gresser of Pan American as they supervise the loading of the precious life saving apparatus aboard the American Airlines Cargo liner that was to rush it (Tuesday) to its New York connection with a waiting PAA Cargo Clipper that, in turn, is set to wing it to the suffering community."
