The pageant refers to the one program of a series of Centennial celebrations to honor those who helped found the State of California. The event, held in Desolation Canyon and attended by thousands of visitors from California and Nevada, included a portrayal of the experiences of the Manly-Jayhawker party in Death Valley during 1849-1850. Photograph caption dated December 2, 1949 reads, "Members of the production staff inspect site of colorful outdoor amphitheater in Desolation Canyon, near Furnace Creek Inn, Death Valley, where the spectacular Death Valley pageant will be staged tomorrow afternoon. Left tor right, James Tracy, T. R. Goodwin, Sterling Stevens, L.D. Mitchell."
