Description
This 8'h x 44'w mural, depicting Father Miguel Hidalgo, Juan de Aldama, Captain Ignacio Allende, and Jose´ Mari´a Morelos, is constructed of 300 hand-made ceramic tiles, each measuring 1' square. Eduardo Carrillo's 1979 design titled "Father Hidalgo in Front of the Church of Dolores", which won the $29,000 commission, portrays the key people at the beginning of the Mexican revolution against Spain in 1810. This mural was commissioned to complement a replica of the Bell of Dolores, which was donated to Los Angeles by the Mexican government in 1968. When Father Hidalgo rang the original bell in Dolores, Mexico, on September 16, 1810, his action became the opening salvo of the Mexican Wars of Independence from Spain. Independence was won in 1821, and at the conclusion of the revolt, Spanish control of Los Angeles ended, and for 26 years the city was an integral part of Mexico.
