Description
“Yao head". Head portrait of a young person smiling at the camera wearing a beaded necklace. The person is Wayao, from the Yao tribe. They are a predominately Muslim people centred around the Southern end of Lake Malawi. In the nineteenth century they traded primarily in Ivory and slaves and had close links with Arab traders.
