Closeup of a commemorative plaque on board the battleship U.S.S. Missouri (BB-63). The plaque reads, "U.S.S. Missouri[,] Over this spot on 2 September 1945 the instrument of formal surrender of Japan to the allied powers was signed thus bringing to a close the Second World War[,]The ship at that time was a anchor in Tokyo Bay[,] Latitude 35' 21' 17" North[,] Longitude 139' 45' 36" East." The U.S.S. Missouri was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named in honor of the U.S. state of Missouri and is the final battleship to be built by the United States. This photo was taken during the ship's second decommissioning ceremony held in San Pedro on March 31, 1992. At the time of the ceremony, she had received a total of eleven battle stars for service in World War II, Korea, and the Persian Gulf. Her name was maintained on the Naval Vessel Register until January 1995, when it was then struck. In 1998 she was donated to the Missouri Memorial Association, and is now a museum ship at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
