Description
Image of the United States ship St. Louis in the harbor of Smyrna (now Izmir), Turkey, demanding the release of Hungarian prisoner Martin Kozta from the Austrian ship Hussar; the St. Louis and the Hussar are pictured at center near other ships with two rowboats positioned next to them for the transport and exchange of the prisoner; coast of Smyrna visible in background at left.
"Genoa Lit. Armanino 1854."--text, bottom right margin. "Designed by A. Poinsett U.S.N."--text, bottom left margin. "Commander Duncan N. Ingraham demanding the release of Martin Kozta from the Austrian Brig of War Hussar. To Commander Duncan N. Ingraham this picture is most respectfully dedicated."--text, bottom center margin.
