Description
Norma Gibbs (1925-2019) was the first female city council member (1970 to 1978) and first female mayor (1975-1976) of the City of Huntington Beach. She is remembered for her work to create the city's Central Library, challenge high-density development and protecting the public beaches from encroachment. She was a professor of Educational Psychology at California State University at Long Beach for 40 years. She was especially interested in involving women in the political process - transforming 1970s homemakers into voters and activists. She is also remembered as the founder of Interval House, a non-profit organization working to support abused women. This film records her important "State of the City" address in which she reflected on the changes in the city and region during her tenure as the first female mayor of Huntington Beach.
