Description
This photograph of the interior of Yee’s Herb Shop at 707 1/2 J St. was taken in circa 1935. Henry Yee came to Sacramento from China in 1906. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1923 with a master’s degree in engineering, he went back to his native Canton Province to help construct a series of railways. Upon returning to Sacramento in 1930, he opened his herbalist practice, carrying on a legacy of Yee herbalists dating back to the 1850s in places like Virginia City, Nevada and Amador County. He also founded Yee Investments, established Big Town Market in 1940, and both founded and served as President of Sacramento’s 1,500-member Yee Family Association. Yee died in June 1979.
