Description
On negative: "Lick Observatory buildings vis San Jose Cal." On reverse: "James Lick dies 1876. Early life a mechanic. Workbench shown at Observatory, buried at Mt. Hamilton under the massive foundation of the Great Telescope 1887. 26 miles from San Jose - 4000 ft. Mt. Hamilton - 6 hous from San Jose, 3 hours to return. Mr. Lick donated $150,000 for the Observatory. Company constructed the roadway leading to it 26 miles $73,000. 72,000 tons of rock removed from the top leaving an immense plateform of solid rock."
