Description
“Liaoyang Hospital (men’s).” Exterior view of a single storey building with two western men standing at the main entrance. The original hospital in Liaoyang was established by Dr Westwater in 1892 and was known as the ‘Free Healing Hall’. During the Boxer Rebellion Dr Westwater, having escaped persecution, returned to Liaoyang with the Russian punitive field force as a member of the Russian Red Cross Society. Aware of the massacres and looting that had befallen other cities, Mr Westwater persuaded the Russian general to allow him to enter the city alone to broker a surrender. The deal was so successful that he became known as the ‘Saviour of Liaoyang’ and the authorities offered to fund new medical facilities. During the battle of Liaoyang in August 1904 Mr Westwater opened a refuge for displaced people, providing for 4,000, and treated an inordinate number of civilian casualties.
