Description
A photographer gazing eastward down K Street captured this photograph the evening of Sept. 9, 1895. In the middle of frame is a pavilion of light over the intersection of Eighth and K streets. It was estimated afterward that the event drew nearly 60,000 participants, with 30,000 of that number traveling to Sacramento from out of town. What they saw was an estimated 25,000 lights, many of them adorning floats that were paraded around the city via the following route: starting at 20th and J streets, proceeding down J Street, up K and 10th Streets, south to P Street, and out P Street to 15th Street. The carnival and parade were held to celebrate the 22-mile transmission of hydroelectric power from Folsom to Sacramento during July of the same year, an event that would stand as the first long-distance delivery of power – 3,000 kilowatts of electricity – that the world had ever known.
