Description
Daughter-in-law of Bertha Gerstle and John Lilienthal, Katherine recalls life in the early 1900s in Larkspur, and Marin County, where the Solomons, Gerstles, and Lilienthals had summer homes and were well-known early San Francisco Jewish families. She describes Escalle, Hills Boat House, Violet Terrace (the Gerstle home in San Rafael), and the 1906 earthquake. She also tells of her San Francisco life, schooling, a 1912 trip abroad, her marriage, and a brief history of the Lilienthal, Solomons, and Gerstle families. From 1974 to 1984, Carla Ehat, with partner Anne Kent, and later Genevieve Martinelli, interviewed a broad spectrum of Marin County's long-time residents, from ranchers to politicians, including descendants of early pioneer families. This program was co-sponsored by the Marin County Free Library and the Moya Library in Ross. The resulting archive, consisting of nearly 300 recordings and their corresponding transcriptions, are housed in the Anne T. Kent California Room at the Civic Center branch of the Marin County Free Library.
