Description
Artist, photographer and early environmentalist, Andrew Putnam Hill, painted this view of a horse and carriage traveling up The Alameda. The street was originally a path connecting Mission Santa Clara to the Pueblo of San Jose. The trees lining either side of The Alameda were planted in 1799 by Father Magin Catala, using the labor of 200 Native Americans. Over time, Victorian mansions and gardens developed along the street. The only remnants of those original trees can be found today at 1860 The Alameda. (See notes)
