Description
Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1899-1989.
Using only his arms to move his body, Bob Wieland completes the City of Los Angeles Marathon in just over 74 hours. Since the inaugural L.A. Marathon in 1986, thousands of weekend warriors have completed the 26.2-mile race, none as inspirational as Wieland, who lost both of his legs after stepping on a mortar round while serving in Vietnam. "'Athlete' is not written in our hamstrings or your grip or your pitching arm," he once said. "It's written in your heart." March 8, 1988.
