Description
The bridge over the Pajaro River at Sargent's Village marked the border between Santa Clara and San Benito counties. It is now part of Highway 101. The town of San Juan Bautista was an important stop on the stage route between Northern and Southern California. Mission San Juan Bautista was founded in 1797. The church itself, the largest of its kind in California, was started in 1803 and, despite damage from numerous earthquakes, has been in continuous use since 1812. The Alum Rock Hill Climb on June 7, 1907, was followed by a run to the Hotel Del Monte in Monterey for Mitchell cars. At more than 70 miles, the four-hour trip on dirt roads was long and uncomfortable. Participants were rewarded with a lunch on the hotel grounds. Some drivers returned to San José that evening while others stayed at the landmark hotel overnight. George and Jenny Polhemus were invited even though they did not own a Mitchell.
