“A medical safari.” ‘Dr & Mrs Wilkinson at one of our three dispensaries [Mukuumi]. They are manned by a dresser with a water carrier & wood splitter.’ Portrait of a European couple standing outside a thatched hut on stilts. Dr John (Jack) Wilkinson replaced Mr Lamont as supervisor of schools and also worked in the hospital, he was based at Chogoria from 1949-1959 after which he took charge of the PCEA hospital at Kikuyu. He was known as Dr Kamwana, the boy doctor, by locals. Jean Wilkinson (nee Ewan) was the first headmistress of the African Girls' High School at Kikuyu before marrying John. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1928-1961 at the Chogoria mission which was established in 1922.
