This interview was conducted as part of the North San Rafael History Project: From Ranches to Ranch Houses: The Growth of San Rafael’s Miller Creek & Las Gallinas Valleys, a collaboration of citizens in North San Rafael and the Anne T. Kent California Room, Marin County Free Library. Interviews were conducted with North San Rafael leaders & pioneers to document the history of the area since World War II, including citizen involvement to protect the quality of life and preserve the unique character and natural assets of the area.
A native Californian, Mr. Freitas is an attorney and the grandson of Manuel T. Freitas whose family lands in north San Rafael were named Terra Linda. Mr. Freitas recalls his prominent family’s history, their Portuguese cultural, their extensive Marin land holdings, and their ranching neighbors. He describes growing up in the Victorian house which was the center of the Freitas Home Ranch, encompassing orchards and a dairy. Mr. Freitas shares his knowledge of the people and politics involved in the development and changes he’s seen in Terra Linda.
