Description
The former head of the Marin County Library at Civic Center, Virginia had lived in San Anselmo since 1907. A Marin county Librarian for 38 years (1931-1968), Virginia tells how Marin County got its library in 1926. Virginia shares stories of early problems: moving library branches to serve a growing population; budget problems; and re-location of the library headquarters from the basement at the Court House to the Coleman School to the Civic Center. Virginia also explains how she created a bookmobile and started the "California Room." She relates many experiences over the years as a County Librarian. Anne T. Kent, also a former librarian, joins in these reminiscences. From 1974 to 1984, Carla Ehat, with partner Anne Kent, and later Genevieve Martinelli, interviewed a broad spectrum of Marin County's long-time residents, from ranchers to politicians, including descendants of early pioneer families. This program was co-sponsored by the Marin County Free Library and the Moya Library in Ross. The resulting archive, consisting of nearly 300 recordings and their corresponding transcriptions, are housed in the Anne T. Kent California Room at the Civic Center branch of the Marin County Free Library.
