Description
"The Navy has received the 2,000th full scale Polaris solid rocket motor produced by the Aerojet-General Corporation in Sacramento, Calif. The unit was a first stage propulsion system for the Navy's 2,500 nautical mile range A-3 model of the Fleet Ballistic Missle that has recorded 21 consecutive successful flights from Cape Kennedy. The rocket motor is seen here being placed in its shipping container that holds the unit suspended on a cushion of air bags. The motor was shipped to the Navy's Pacific Missile Facility at Bangor, Wash., where it will be integrated into an operational missile. The first of the 2,000 units containing over 25 million pounds of high energy propellant was produced in 1959. Aerojet developed and produced all first and second stage rocket motors for the 1,200 nautical mile range A-1 missle, the first stage units for the 1,500 mile range Polaris A-2 and is presently producing the first stage for the longer range A-3."
