Description
Shown in circa 1900 is the Southern Pacific Railroad's ferryboat "Solano." Built in 1880, the 424-foot-long vessel was considered to be the largest train ferry in the world. Its charge was to ford Carquinez Strait, between Benicia and Port Costa. Central Pacific and Southern Pacific trains crossed the Strait at this point, from 1879 to 1930.
