Description
Note: Ähnliches Bild Cf. D-30.18.072. (PST). Note translation: Similar photo Cf. D-30.18.072. (PST). - Published as no 72a in the album 'Eighty pictures of the Goldcoast (West Africa) by the missionary Fritz Ramseyer', Neuenburg 1895. - Caption in album: "An executioner from Kumase. The executioner, whom we see before us in the picture, was still carrying out his sanguinary office a few years ago. About five years ago he fled from Kumase to Abetifi. He get to know us during our captivity in the Asante capital, and has frequently visited us since. He was one of about forty executioners who used to surround the King. These men were prepared for this terrible profession from their youth. In Kumase we saw young executioners who were scarcely fourteen years old. We can say with confidence that over the years this man will have beheaded more than 700 people."
