Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Made possible and accessible through the generous support of the Security Pacific National Bank, Sunlaw Cogeneration Partners, Photo Friends, California Council for the Humanities, the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, and the John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation
Image is a reproduction. View of Louise Steinman with Buddy the horse, at Glory Ranch. At the ranch, one was assigned their own horse to care for during their stay, and on whom they would learn horsemanship. Glory Ranch preceded all the tracts and houses in Calabasas, and a person could ride for days over the hills, which in the spring, were a bright yellow with mustard weed. The owners of Glory Ranch (who raised quarter horses) were Rosemary and Edward "Dolson" Gebert. The Gebert's purchased the 53-acre ranch from the actor Jack Carson in the 1950s. The ranch was located on Old Topanga Canyon Road, 1.9 miles south of Calabasas. Photograph dated 1960.
