In the early 1800s, Salton Sea was mainly a salt mining location, in the 1920s it became somewhat of a tourist attraction due to its water recreation and the waterfowl that were attracted to this area. Large crowds of people enjoy an L.A. Chamber of Commerce trip to Salton Sea Beach on a sunny day. Several men and women can be seen standing near the water as well as venturing farther in at some spots. At 220 feet below sea level, the Salton Sea is an inland saline lake that covers a surface area of approximately 376 square miles.
