Photograph of Mission Santa Barbara, showing cord maker at work on "the cord of St. Francis", California, 1898. At center, a monk can be seen sitting in a chair. This monk is wearing an apron over his cassock, and he can be seen gripping a large rope in his left hand. The long rope hangs from the ceiling overhead. Above where the monk grips the rope with his hand, two circular disks can be seen along the rope spreading out the threads. Behind the monk, a simple wooden door is visible. To the right, a wooden table can be seen. Additional materials hang from the wall at left.
