The Northern Trust Open, formerly known as the Nissan Open, and originally known as the Los Angeles Open, is a regular golf tournament on the PGA Tour. This yearly event has been played at numerous golf courses in Southern California between its inauguration in 1926 to present day (2009). These golf courses have included: Los Angeles Country Club (Los Angeles), El Caballero Country Club (Tarzana), Wilshire Country Club (Los Angeles), Riviera Country Club (Pacific Palisades), Hillcrest Country Club (Los Angeles), Griffith Park (Los Angeles), Fox Hills Country Club (Culver City), Inglewood Country Club (Inglewood), Rancho Park Golf Course (Los Angeles), Brookside Golf Course (Pasadena), Valencia Country Club (Valencia). In 1992, the Nissan Los Angeles Open, held at the Riviera Country Club, was the site of Tiger Woods' first PGA Tour event as an amateur player.
Pictured is the Wilshire Country Club, a beautiful course located at 301 N. Rossmore Avenue in Los Angeles' mid-Wilshire district. Photograph shows a few golfers at the 16th green, along the Barranca - competing against each other in the $10,000 Los Angeles Open, which took place at the Wilshire Country Club in 1931. Norman Macbeth designed the 18-hole regulation length course in 1919, which sits on a 107-acre parcel of land. A barranca that used to be a running stream comes into play on at least 13 holes, nestling the 16th and 18th greens into or along side, with the clubhouse just behind. Unfortunately, the barranca was all but washed out during a torrential 1938 storm and had to be "rebuilt". Some notable members of Wilshire Country Club have included Bob Hope, Howard Hughes, Mae West, and Harold Lloyd, just to name a few. The club has hosted the PGA Tour's Los Angeles Open (1928, 1931, 1933, and 1944), the LPGA Office Depot Championship (2001), and the Champions Tour's Senior Classic (1995-2000). Photograph dated: January 11, 1931.
