Putnam came to Maryknoll in 1937 after receiving a degree from Georgetown University. During the depression years he volunteered at the Catholic Worker in New York and became acquainted with Maryknoll. He was ordained in 1944. He was assigned to Kweilin, China in 1946 and from 1946-1951 he performed pastoral work with students at Kwangsi University and at Lingnan University in Canton he served as the Assistant Professor of Sociology and chaplain to Catholic students. He was on the faculty at Glen Ellyn, professor of sociology at Kipalapala in Tanzania, the seminary in Nairobi and Shinyanga Government Hospital. In later years Fr. Putnam returned to China, teaching in universities from 1986-1990.
