This image was originally part of a California State Library photographic history project documenting the daily lives and historical, political, and cultural contributions of California's diverse communities. On June 12, 1999, Long Beach residents donated to the Long Beach Public Library 398 family and personal photographs as part of this ongoing statewide project. This image shows small colorfully costumed children of the Holy Innocents Roman Catholic Church participating in a celebration for Our Lady of Guadalupe. The event is organized yearly by Floriza Martinez and includes music and food. The celebration begins at seven p.m. and continues as an all-night vigil until the 6 a.m. Mass held the next day, which features mariachi music. Floriza says she gives back and donates her time for this event because she has been "given so much." DATE NOTES: Noted on image back. ORIG. IMAGE: 5.5" x 9" color glossy print. NEGATIVE: No. KEYWORDS: Costume, holidays.
