Not long after Joan Barry filed the first paternity suit against Chaplin, federal prosecutors brought Mann Act charges against Charlie Chaplin in relation to Barry; he was acquitted. Photograph caption dated March 28, 1944 reads, "Chaplin, left, and Lieut. Claude Marple of the Beverly Hills police force, who was also indicted on a conspiracy charge, shown signing the fingerprint cards after there were fingerprinted."
