Description
Joseph Brazil holding daughter, Margaret Ann, with her dog Spotty, on the family ranch located at 260 Gaffey Rd, Watsonville, CA. Joseph's father (and Theresa Cardoza's great grandather) Joaquin Texiera Brazil (1856 - 1938) owned the original ranch; he came from Sao Jorege, (St. George) Azores on a whaling ship, jumped ship in the late 1800s. It is believed that he worked in the New Idria Quicksliver Mine and then came to Watsonville and purchased the Gaffey Rd property. He then went to the gold mines in Norther California, returning to Watsonville and bought at least 3 ranch properties, planting apple orchards. He married Anna Luz Brazil (1869 - 1913) in 1888; by the 1910 Census they had 6 children and by the 1920 Census Mr. Brazil was a widower. Children: Joaquin, Manuel, Antone, Rosaline John, Joseph, Julian, William and Mary (dies 1903, 8yrs old).
