Description
Photograph taken from the balcony, looking down on an auditorium where Lee de Forest is on stage accepting the 1946 Edison Medal, awarded by the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. According to the New York Times of 29 January, 1947, de Forest received the award on January 28th during the AIEE's Winter Meeting, held in the Engineering Societies' Building at 33 West Thirty-ninth Street, New York. It was presented by J. Elmer Housley, President of the AIEE. de Forest was honored for his "pioneering achievement in radio, and for the invention of the grid-controlled vacuum tube with its profound technical and social consequence." Housely is seen onstage presenting de Forest with his award, while David Sarnoff, who introduced de Forest, is seated behind Housley.
