Description
Photograph of the construction of Buck storeage dam. Donor/Source: Ron Hanford (owned by Glenn Way) GMW 1470629.
Several steps in the construction of Buck storage dam are evident in this Picture (as well as GMW 148, 149). The boulders which built the base of the dam were brought to the site from the quarries on H.H. Boomer's narrow-guage train, powered by a steam powered Shay engine. The train's ore cars could be tripped, causing the rocks to fall off to the side of the tracks. They would then be lifted and placed with the stiff legged derricks lined up along the skirt of the dam. Most of these derricks lined up along the skirt of the dam. Most of these derricks were powered by compressed air. A steel "mat" was then formed out of reinforcing bar to hold an apron of cement on the lakeside of the dam. The tower (11) was used for lifting cement into the air so that it would be poured out onto this steel mat. The tower's bucket was filled with concrete that was delivered by trucks. Also visible is the forms for the original outlet valve that released the water back into Bucks Creek to the diversion dam. It was later replaced with the present day valve by PG&E.
