Article by Charles Handy on the language of leadership in organizations. Handy begins the article discussing changes in leadership language, emphasizing how research has exchanged the language of engineering for the language of political theory. As a consequence of this change, talks concerning leadership are of networks and alliances, federalism, shared values, and cultures, in other words, the terms of political systems, which coincide with the language of leadership. He proceeds to directly address the concepts of federalism and networks as they relate to organizational leadership, and concludes the essay suggesting that organizations should embrace the new language of leadership, the language of politics, and begin to see themselves as societies of citizens.
