Title supplied by cataloger. When the Stardust Resort and Casino opened on July 2, 1958 it had the largest casino, the largest swimming pool, and the largest hotel in Las Vegas; it was located on 63 acres along the Las Vegas Strip. The famed Stardust sign became a symbol of Las Vegas and was reportedly visible from 60 miles away. In 1964 a nine-story tower (called the East Tower) was erected bringing the room count to 1,470. In 1991 a 32-story West Tower was added to the resort bringing the total room count to 1,500. In addition to this, two landscaped swimming pools, a golf course, and athletic facilities were also built, bringing the renovation total to $300 million. Throughout its years in operation, the casino resort changed hands a number of times, but unfortunately, it succumbed to the times and permanently closed its doors to the public on November 1, 2006. On March 13, 2007, the landmark hotel was imploded in a grand ceremony, which included fireworks prior to the East and West Towers' tumble.
