This aerial photograph shows a panoramic view of Long Beach and shoreline, looking northeast. The locations of the four new oil islands are marked on the image: "A,B,C,D." The oil islands were informally referred to alphabetically, and sometimes as "Alpha," "Bravo," "Charlie," and "Delta," until formally named in 1967 after four deceased American astronauts. Island A became Virgil "Gus" Grissom Island; Island B became Edward H. White Island, Island C became Roger Chaffee Island; and Island D became Theodore Cordy Freeman Island. In the foreground of this image, the harbor is visible, and Pier J has also been labelled. In the distance, foothills and portions of Orange County are also visible. DATE NOTES: Circa 1960's. ORIG. IMAGE: 8" x 10" B&W glossy print. NEGATIVE: No. KEYWORDS: THUMS (Texaco, Humble, Union, Mobil, Shell), Occidental Petroleum, Oxy Petroleum, energy production, port.
